ITINERARIES ... 

Pulaski County Missouri provides unique experiences. Your group can experience a military post by visiting the indoor Mahaffey Museum Complex as well as the outdoor World War II Company Area which features the living quarters of soldiers from that era. Barracks, a mess hall, a chapel, even a Prisoner of War encampment which was home to several German soldiers during the 40's. Across the street from the indoor museums are impressive historic Engineer, Chemical and Military Police vehicles dating from WWII to the Global War on terror.

Church Groups, Reunions, Student Groups, Organizations will enjoy a weekend on the Gasconade or Big Piney River, camping, swimming, fishing and floating.

Fort Leonard Wood Tour-Pulaski County

Spend the day touring sites and museums which honor our military forces. This tour is on an active military base and requires prior approval thru proper channels. Ft. Leonard Wood is the largest training base in the US and is very group friendly.

DAY 1

9:00 am - Arrive at Pulaski County Visitor Center, I-44, Exit 161

Welcome to Pulaski County USA! We roll out the red carpet as we welcome your group to Pulaski County with a complimentary comfort stop and refreshment break at our spacious Visitor Center, only 2 miles from Ft. Leonard Wood. As an affiliate MO Welcome Center, we offer 4 rooms to browse and souvenirs available for purchase. Each guest will receive a free goodie bag, customized for your tour.

9:45 am - Arrive front gate Ft. Leonard Wood
A step –on guide in most cases, a Drill Sergeant in uniform will board the motor coach. Guide is provided at no charge by Ft. Leonard Wood.

10:00 am to 11:15 am - Windshield Tour of FLW
Tour may include Sapper Leader Course, Stem Village, USO, Nutter Field House, Brigade Row, Main Exchange, Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel Housing, Tech Park, NCO Academy and Installation Headquarters. NOTE: Other training areas may be available with proper clearance. Consult us for more details to customize your tour.

11:30 am to 12:30 pm - Eat lunch in dining facility
Dine in a “mess hall” and interact with the soldiers. Full meals are $4.55 person, paid as a group, please. An entrée, veggie, salad bar, and drink are included in the cost.

12:45 pm to 3:45 pm - Tour Mahaffey Museum Complex
Named after the Civilian to the Secretary of the Army, Mahaffey Museum Complex houses the rich history and contributions of the Military Police, Army Engineers, and Chemical Warfare Units during conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. This is the only place in the country where you can see 3 U.S. Army Branch museums in a single location. The museum complex is also adjacent to the WWII Army Complex Museum replicating Fort Leonard Wood as it was during the 1940’s.

4:00 pm - Depart Ft. Leonard Wood

4:30 pm - Arrive at hotel, check in - click here for lodging options.

Learn about the history still alive along this famous route. A step on guide will meet you at a pre-determined location and provide your group with interesting facts and will provide a lively presentation featuring photo flip books from a time gone by.

Day 2
 
9:00 am - Arrive at Pulaski County Visitor Center, I-44, Exit 161

9:45 am to 12:15 pm - Meet Guide for Historic Route 66 Tour
A step–on guide, a local historian, is available for a one-of a kind tour of Historic Route 66. The nominal fee includes a lively 2.5 hour narrative journey along the Mother Road. Some sections of the infamous road are from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s and is easily driven. You will notice the half curb on the Mother Road, designed in 1943 to keep autos on the road, but often as not, would tip them over. Travel through the Sugar Bowl Bluffs at Hooker Cut and see the community of Devil’s Elbow, named by tie rafters frustrated at the large bolder lodged in the bend of the Big Piney River. See Sheldon’s Market and Post Office, built in 1945. A scenic overlook affords a view of the valley and a look at the Frisco spur wooden trestle bridge that leads to Ft. Leonard Wood.

12:30 pm - Lunch in Pulaski County
Pulaski County offers an array of American and ethnic restaurant options including franchises, unique dining options and catering. Chose from authentic German, Greek, Italian and Oriental dining establishments for a change of pace. Or dine at Colton’s Steakhouse, Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday or any of the nationally recognized restaurants. There are scenic settings overlooking the Gasconade River or seats at a Hibatchi grill with an entertaining chef. Missouri is known for their BBQ; enjoy the Elbow Inn and BBQ Pit or Sweetwater BBQ for down home good barbecue. Need to keep moving? Have a box lunch delivered right to your motor coach. 2:00-4:00 pm - Step Back In Time – Historic Museums on Route 66
Open by appointment for Group Tours. Tour the Old Pulaski County Courthouse Museum, one of two courthouses located along Historic Route 66, with original judge and jury boxes. Also tour the Old Stagecoach Stop, listed on the national Registry of Historic Places, conveniently located ½ block from Courthouse Museum. Each museum is $2 per person, for approximately a 1 hour tour.

CHUGGING RIGHT ALONG ...
 

Step back in time by visiting the quaint towns of Dixon, Crocker and Richland situated along the Frisco Railroad.... Enjoy this 45 mile self-guided tour that winds along the Historic Frisco Railroad. Tour approximately one and a half hours. Railroad Museum tour focusing on the Frisco Railroad. Located along Hwy 17 in Crocker. Tour approximately one hour. Call 573-736-2649 for an appointment. Stop by the Frisco Railroad Caboose for a Great photo opportunity!


PRESERVING THE PAST ...
 
Waynesville, nestled in the valley along the old Wire Road and Trail of Tears, offers historic museums, quaint shops and restaurants. Tour the Pulaski County Courthouse Museum which served as the county courthouse until 1993. History is preserved as you tour the War room, domestication room, farm room, original court room complete with wooden jury box and Judge's stand. Open Saturday - April through September or by appointment for Group Tours. Donations: $1 per person. Tour approximately one hour. Step back in time while touring the Old Stagecoach Stop Museum, tour the oldest building in Pulaski County. The building served as a stagecoach stop and inn and during the civil war it served as a hospital. Tour guides are dressed in period clothing. Open Saturday: April-September or by appointment for Group Tours. Donations: $1 per person. Tour approximately one hour. Enjoy a one mile walk along the Roubidoux River from the Waynesville City Park to Laughlin Memorial Park, a National Park on the National Historic Trail as an encampment on the Trail of Tears. Enjoy the wild flowers along the trail leading to the boardwalk above the Roubidoux Spring and underwater cave. Approximately 1 hour.

Floating - Pulaski County has several outfitters to serve your group paddle sport needs and offer endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Three hour to three day floats are available. Fishing - The Gasconade River, the longest in MO, is known for the best smallmouth bass in the nation. The Big Piney River, the largest tributary of the Gasconade, provides excellent opportunities for anglers to catch goggle-eye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, sunfish or catfish. Lodging - Retreat to one of our 4 outdoor resorts, all built in the 1930's. One resort offers cabins nestled along a 7 acre pond, while others offer pavilions, fire rings and hiking trails with choices of one and two bedroom cabins or cottages and three bedroom lodges with communal kitchens. Another campground offers model RV’s for a lodging option. Play a game of volley ball or swim in an outdoor pool.
